Cabinet Refacing Cost: Price Ranges and What a Quote Covers

Compare cabinet refacing prices by kitchen, linear foot, door and material, then check the work and hardware included in each quote.

Cabinet refacing costs $4,000 to $9,500 per kitchen in one remodeling company's published guide, with $100 to $250 per linear foot stated separately.12

Use those figures for planning, then check exactly what each quote includes. Ask the contractor to list every door, drawer front, exposed cabinet surface and piece of hardware that will be replaced. That written list will tell you more than a total with no cabinet count.

How much does cabinet refacing cost?

One remodeling company gives $4,000 to $9,500 per kitchen; two companies give $100 to $250 per linear foot for general cabinet refacing.12

These figures come from published price guides. They aren't measured averages from identical projects. The kitchen estimate doesn't state a cabinet inventory, while the linear-foot estimate varies with material and complexity. Neither company specifies what your contractor must include.12

Ask how the contractor measures linear feet. Request separate quantities for upper cabinets, base cabinets, doors and drawer fronts. Keep those original quantities with each quote. Don't turn a published per-foot rate into a kitchen total unless the contractor confirms the measurement method and the work included.

Kitchen cabinet refacing cost by kitchen size

One Mercer County, New Jersey contractor estimates $4,500 to $15,000 installed for its 10×10 kitchen, with 10 feet of uppers plus 10 feet of bases.4

The contractor uses a 20-linear-foot convention.4 That figure isn't a cabinet count based on your room's floor dimensions. Ask for a measured cabinet list for your kitchen, including the island and any tall cabinets. Ask whether the contractor prices those pieces separately.

The general kitchen estimate above has no stated linear footage.1 Keep it separate from this regional example. Use the material comparison below to check the work specified by the contractor. Then request a local quote for the same material and finish.

Cabinet refacing cost per door

One renovation platform estimates $200 to $300 per door when the door is part of a full cabinet-refacing project.3

That's a bundled-project estimate. It doesn't establish the price of a replacement door bought by itself. The platform describes pricing by opening, then gives its figure per door.3 Ask the contractor to define the unit before you compare it with your door count.

Have the contractor list doors, drawer fronts and complete drawers separately. Ask whether the quoted unit includes installation, finish matching, hinge boring and new hinges. Request a separate rate for drawer fronts if it differs. A door allowance won't cover work inside a drawer unless the quote says it will.

What changes the cost of cabinet refacing

Material, design complexity and hardware choices affect refacing prices.2 Choose those details before you ask contractors to price the same job.

Door and veneer material

One Mercer County, New Jersey contractor publishes installed 10×10 refacing estimates from $4,500 for laminate to $15,000 for solid-wood doors with veneered boxes.4

Ask for separate specifications for the door construction and box covering. Get the material under each finish in writing. Our medium-density fiberboard versus plywood guide explains those materials. If you're considering a Shaker profile, use the Shaker cabinet guide when you specify it.

Ask to see a finished door sample beside the proposed box covering. Write the selected color, sheen and profile into the order. If you change a selection, request a revised total before you approve the work.

Hinges, drawer slides and drawer boxes

One provider includes new hinges in its usual refacing scope and lists soft-close hardware among its extras.5 A second provider lists soft-close hinges and new handles or pulls as upgrades.6

Ask for separate answers about hinges, pulls, drawer slides and drawer boxes. Tell the contractor which existing parts you want to keep. Ask for the name of each replacement part and confirmation that it will work with your existing cabinets. If the quote only describes the front, you still need to ask whether the drawer itself will change.

What a refacing quote covers

Two providers include new doors and drawer fronts, coverings for exposed boxes, and installation in their refacing scope descriptions.56

One provider lists countertops, sink changes, under-cabinet lighting and crown molding among common extras.5 Ask for separate prices if you want them. Ask about drawer-box repairs and new slides too. The cited scope descriptions don't include them.56

Before you sign, request a written list of exclusions and allowances. Ask what happens if the installer finds damaged boxes and whether the contractor needs your approval before adding work. Keep the accepted material samples with the quote so you can compare them with the delivered parts.

Ask about the schedule too. One provider states that on-site refacing takes roughly three to five days after materials arrive.5 That doesn't tell you how long your kitchen will be unusable. Request separate delivery and installation dates, plus instructions about access to the sink and appliances. Use our questions to ask a cabinet maker when you prepare your quote request.

Cabinet refacing cost vs replacing

Refacing is estimated at $4,000 to $9,500 per kitchen; replacement costs about $6,000 for stock boxes to $60,000 or more for custom work.13 The replacement source excludes delivery and installation from its stock-box figures. Compare itemized quotes before you choose. See refacing versus replacing for the decision, kitchen cabinet cost for replacement prices, and custom cabinet cost for custom work.3

Questions people actually ask

What is the average cost for cabinet refacing?

One remodeling company's published kitchen-refacing range is $4,000 to $9,500.1 It isn't a measured national average and doesn't specify one kitchen size. Confirm the included materials and hardware before you compare a quote with it.

What is the average cost to reface a 10x10 kitchen cabinet?

One Mercer County, New Jersey contractor gives $4,500 to $15,000 installed for its 10×10 kitchen with 20 linear feet of cabinets.4 That convention includes 10 feet of upper cabinets and 10 feet of base cabinets.4 This regional contractor estimate doesn't establish a national average.

Is it cheaper to reface or replace cabinets?

Yes, in the ranges we cite: refacing starts at $4,000 per kitchen and replacement starts at about $6,000 for stock boxes.13 The prices overlap and the installation scope differs. Compare quotes for your cabinet inventory and chosen finish before you decide which option costs less.

What is the downside of cabinet refacing?

Refacing costs $4,000 to $9,500 per kitchen in one published range, and it keeps the existing boxes and layout.15 Replacing the fronts and covering surfaces won't repair damaged boxes or change the cabinet arrangement.

Is it worth it to reface kitchen cabinets?

One company's published refacing range is $4,000 to $9,500 per kitchen.1 Whether it's worth it depends on the cabinet boxes. Refacing is worth considering when the boxes are structurally sound and you want to keep the layout.5 Have those conditions checked before you pay for new fronts.

How much does it cost to reface a cabinet door?

One renovation platform gives $200 to $300 per door within a full cabinet-refacing project.3 Confirm the included finish, installation and hardware. This figure doesn't apply to a door purchased by itself.
