Custom Closet Cost: Reach-In and Walk-In Prices
Compare installed reach-in and walk-in closet prices, then check the materials, components and work included in each quote.
How much does a custom closet cost?
Custom closets cost $1,000–$3,000 per reach-in or $2,500–$10,000+ per walk-in, installed with design and materials, in one closet company's May 2026 guide.1

These prices come from three separate providers. National Closet Company published the Tennessee prices, and its guide doesn't establish a national average.1 CWA Closets and Cabinets is the Atlanta-area studio. It compiles published industry sources, and its table doesn't establish measured Atlanta averages.2 ClosetX is the second provider, and its ranges describe its metro Atlanta program.3 We haven't merged the prices. Use our closet dimensions guide and walk-in closet dimensions guide to plan the space before you request a measured design.
The Tennessee company's prices apply to a closet that already has walls and a door.1 If your project includes a new room, ask for that work separately. For a “closet remodel,” write down whether you want new storage, changes to the room, or both.
Reach-in closet cost
A reach-in closet costs $1,000–$4,000 per closet installed, including design and materials, in the Atlanta-area studio's August 2026 guide.2 Its table doesn't specify a fixed width or drawer count for that range.2 Ask the designer to list the hanging sections, shelves and drawers included in your price.
Walk-in closet cost
A walk-in with an island costs $4,500–$12,000 per closet installed in the second metro Atlanta provider's August 2026 guide.3 Keep the island in the description when you compare this price with other walk-in prices.
The Tennessee company's walk-in range has an open upper endpoint and doesn't specify an island.1 Ask for a drawing and an item list with your quote. If you want an island or enclosed storage, request one version with those features and one without them. Keep every other specification the same when you compare the versions.
What a closet quote covers
An installed price needs a written list of included work. The providers in the table describe different scopes.123
CWA's August 2026 guide includes design, materials and labor in its published installed prices.2 ClosetX lists cabinetry, hardware, delivery, installation, old-system removal and disposal, and patches for the old system's mounting holes in its package.3 These are separate descriptions. Neither one adds those items to the Tennessee company's price.
Ask each company to identify delivery, removal and finishing work in writing. If a task is missing, ask whether the company excludes it or left it out of the document. Do this before you agree to a price. Keep the answer with the drawing and component list.
What a closet quote often leaves out
Removal, wall repairs and lighting need clear answers because the two Atlanta-area providers describe different scopes.23 The table keeps their published statements separate and adds a question about room doors.
Costs outside a closet system quote
| Work to check | Published scope or question to ask |
|---|---|
| Removing the old system | The studio guide excludes demolition; the other provider includes removal and disposal.23 |
| Wall repair and painting | The second provider includes patches for the old system's mounting holes, but excludes broader wall repairs and painting.3 |
| Lighting and electrical work | The studio guide excludes lighting electrical work. The second provider excludes electrical work beyond connecting the light fittings it supplies.23 |
| Room doors | Ask whether an existing room door needs changes and who would quote that work. No room-door price is included here. |
| Flooring or moving a wall | The second provider excludes these tasks.3 |
We haven't added an allowance for these tasks to the closet prices. Request a separate amount and a named contractor for any work your closet installer won't perform. Ask which tasks must finish before the storage system arrives.
What changes the price of a custom closet
Custom systems run roughly $100–$350 per linear foot installed in the Tennessee company's May 2026 guide. Layout, materials and accessories affect the price.1 Its scope includes design, materials and installation in an existing closet.1
The guide doesn't give a detailed counting method for its per-linear-foot figure.1 Ask how your provider measures the system, including stacked sections, corners and islands. Don't turn your room's floor area into a cabinet length or multiply this published range into a quote.
Ask for the panel specification, thickness and finish. The Atlanta-area studio recommends checking those details when you compare quotes.2 Read our medium-density fiberboard (MDF) versus plywood guide for board-material details. Keep the material specification beside the design so you can see what changed between revisions.
Ask for every drawer bank, pull-out, light fitting or island on the item list. Request the installed price difference for an alternative design. We don't give a separate dollar amount for each accessory because the selected prices don't establish that scope.
Custom closet or a closet system
For a 6-foot opening, one adjustable kit has a $214 list price before installation; one metro Atlanta provider lists $1,200–$3,000 per installed custom reach-in closet.43
Ready-made kit and installed custom storage for a 6-foot opening
| Option | Price and unit | Size basis | Scope and date |
|---|---|---|---|
| Retailer's adjustable kit | $214 list price per kit | Advertised for closets 4–8 feet wide; the range includes a 6-foot opening | Product price; self-installation. Listed October 14, 2026; shipping requires a separate estimate.4 |
| Metro Atlanta provider's custom system | $1,200–$3,000 per closet installed | Provider's example uses a typical 6-foot opening | Cabinetry, hardware, delivery, installation, removal/disposal and patches for the old system's mounting holes. Guide dated August 1, 2026.3 |
The kit is Rubbermaid's expandable closet kit sold by Omni Outdoor Living. Its price covers the product, and the seller describes it as a do-it-yourself system.4 The custom example comes from ClosetX.3 Both prices use the same opening width, but the storage isn't identical. The kit price doesn't include paid installation. Ask for that amount before you compare finished-project costs.
How to check a closet quote
Compare your quote with a written specification. Keep the closet type and included work with every price.
- Type and measured space: Identify the closet and attach the proposed layout. Ask the installer to confirm the site measurements.
- Price unit: State whether the amount covers the whole closet or uses another unit. For a length-based quote, request the counted sections.
- Materials: Record panel type, thickness, finish and hardware. Keep these details the same when you request competing quotes.
- Components: List the hanging sections, shelves, drawers, doors and accessories. Identify optional items separately.
- Included and excluded work: Ask about design, delivery, fitting, removal, patching, painting and electrical work. Name who handles each excluded task.
- Installer and changes: Identify who measures, who installs, and how a design change will be priced before work starts.
Use our questions to ask a cabinet maker for the wider contractor conversation. Keep the accepted drawing, specifications and scope with the price. When you receive a revision, ask what changed before you compare its total with the previous version.
Questions people actually ask
What is the cost of a custom closet installation?
Custom closet installation costs $1,000–$4,000 per reach-in or $2,000–$8,000 per standard walk-in, including design and materials, in an Atlanta-area studio's August 2026 guide.2 These are whole-project installed prices. The table excludes demolition, lighting electrical work and structural changes.2
Is it cheaper to build a closet or buy one?
For a 6-foot opening, one kit has a $214 list price before installation; one metro Atlanta provider lists $1,200–$3,000 per installed custom reach-in closet.43 The kit is advertised for closets 4–8 feet wide.4 This compares a retail product with an installed service. It doesn't establish the cost of building a closet room or the cost of identical finished storage.
What are the cost factors of a custom closet?
Custom closet systems run roughly $100–$350 per linear foot installed in one company's May 2026 guide. Layout, materials and accessories affect the price.1 Design and materials are included.1 Ask for the quoted configuration and the provider's measurement method before you use a per-foot figure to compare proposals.
Are custom closets worth the money?
It depends on how long you keep the closet and how much of it you use. For a 6-foot opening, the kit has a $214 list price before installation; the metro Atlanta custom example is $1,200–$3,000 per closet installed.43 The scopes are different. Neither price establishes a financial return. List the storage problems you want resolved. Ask the designer to show where the proposed layout addresses each one.
What is the average cost of a walk-in closet?
For rooms from 6 × 8 to 8 × 10 feet, one Atlanta-area studio lists $3,500–$5,500 per installed walk-in closet.5 Its October 2026 guide includes design and materials, but excludes lighting electrical work, flooring changes and structural changes.5 This is a published price range. It isn't a measured national average. The room-size range doesn't establish a suitable storage layout. Use our walk-in closet dimensions guide to check the layout.
How much does a custom reach in closet cost?
A custom reach-in across a typical 6-foot opening costs $1,200–$3,000 per closet installed in one metro Atlanta provider's August 2026 guide.3 Its scope includes cabinetry, hardware, delivery, installation, old-system removal and patches for the old system's mounting holes.3 The example doesn't specify a room depth or height. Ask for a measured drawing and component list for your quote.
Where these numbers come from
The Tennessee company's estimates come from its May 31, 2026 guide.1 The Atlanta-area studio's guide was updated August 26, 2026, and the second metro Atlanta provider's article is dated August 1, 2026.23
The kit's $214 list price was listed by an online retailer on October 14, 2026.4 The size-specific walk-in range comes from the Atlanta-area studio's separate guide, updated October 17, 2026.5 We read all five source pages on October 14, 2026, and rechecked the walk-in guide on October 20, 2026. Their prices and scope lists remain separate. We haven't calculated an average, combined range or project total. Ask your local provider for a dated quote for the work you want.
