How much do walnut cabinets cost?

In 2026, semi-custom walnut kitchen cabinets cost $600–$850 per linear foot for cabinetry alone in one cabinet manufacturer's guide.1

Both sources give the same semi-custom range. One manufacturer excludes installation, hardware, countertops and design fees from that price.1 Ask A Cabinetmaker describes veneer construction in its semi-custom tier and selected solid-walnut components in its custom tier.2

Our custom cabinet cost guide lists $1,200–$1,800+ per linear foot installed for a combined luxury specification: walnut, inset doors and integrated appliance panels. Its underlying source describes Tennessee pricing.3 Keep that combination separate when comparing kitchen cabinet costs.

Now ask each shop to price the same cabinet list and installation scope. Have each one list delivery, removal, trim and hardware separately. Then ask how it counts wall cabinets, tall cabinets and the island in the linear footage.

Walnut veneer or solid walnut

Walnut veneer is a thin layer of walnut over another material.9 Ask A Cabinetmaker uses veneer on stable cores in its semi-custom examples and specifies solid-walnut components in its fully custom description.2 Those labels don't identify every material in a finished cabinet.

Ask which doors, drawer fronts, ends and boxes are solid walnut or veneered. Then ask what supports the veneer. Compare a complete finished door with the proposed end panel before you order.

Is walnut more expensive than oak or maple?

One Tennessee cabinet shop's 2026 guide lists walnut at 30–50% over a paint-grade baseline.3

The same guide uses paint-grade poplar or maple as its baseline. It lists white oak at 15–25% more and stained maple or cherry at 10–15% more.3 The same figures appear in our white oak cabinet guide.

Ask the cabinetmaker to quote each species with the same doors, finish requirements and installation. Keep grain matching and wood selection on separate lines. That lets you compare the species without mixing in different construction or finishing work.

How hard is walnut?

Black walnut rates 1,010 lbf for side hardness at 12% moisture content in the 2021 Wood Handbook.11

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Products Laboratory defines this modified Janka test as resistance to indentation.11 The Wood Database says the test presses a steel ball halfway into the wood.10

White oak's corresponding Handbook value is 1,360 lbf; sugar maple's is 1,450 lbf.11 Black walnut has less resistance to indentation in this comparison. If dent resistance matters most to you, compare the harder options too.

Use the test for that one comparison. Ask separately about the finish, door construction, hinges and drawer hardware. A wood-hardness number doesn't tell you how long the assembled cabinet or its finish will last.11

How walnut changes color

Natural black walnut with oil or hard-wax oil can lighten toward honey-brown over 3–5 years of indoor light exposure, according to one furniture seller.9

Keep the conditions with the timeline: natural black walnut, oil or hard-wax oil, and indoor light. Walnutry describes different aging behavior for stained, tinted and film-finished furniture.9 A cabinet seller also says walnut becomes lighter and more golden-brown with air and light, without promising a fixed period.8

Ask the shop to put an older sample of the proposed finish beside a new one. Have the shop explain how the wood and coating may change in your kitchen. Decide whether you like the older sample before you accept the finish.

Walnut, black walnut and English walnut

Black walnut, also called American walnut, is Juglans nigra, the species with the 1,010 lbf value used here.4 11

English walnut is a different species, Juglans regia. The Wood Database also calls it European walnut and lists a Janka hardness of 1,220 lbf.5 Keep that figure separate from black walnut's entry in the comparison below.

A walnut-colored finish can be a different wood. Ask A Cabinetmaker shows other domestic woods stained to a walnut tone.2 If a proposal says only “walnut,” ask the shop to name the species and finish. Have the shop identify walnut wood, walnut veneer or another material before you compare the price with a walnut quote.

Walnut, white oak or maple

White oak at 1,360 lbf and sugar maple at 1,450 lbf both exceed black walnut's 1,010 lbf in the same Handbook table.11

Ask for finished samples from the grade the shop will supply. Tell the maker how much light-and-dark variation you'll accept across adjacent doors. Compare the full door, including its frame and center panel, with the drawer fronts.

For other options, the same Handbook table gives black cherry 950 lbf and pecan hickory 1,820 lbf, also at 12% moisture content.11 Our cabinet wood comparison covers those species and their finish choices. The pecan figure applies to that named species; other hickories have different values.11

What to specify when you order walnut cabinets

Put these 6 specification items in your walnut cabinet order before you approve production:

  1. Species: Name black walnut or the other species the shop will use. Have the shop explain every different wood in the order.
  2. Solid or veneer: Identify the construction of each visible part. Ask what material supports each veneered surface.
  3. Sapwood: Black walnut can have nearly white sapwood beside brown heartwood.4 Mark the amount of pale wood you'll accept on an approved sample.
  4. Finish: Record the actual coating and any stain or tint. Keep the signed sample with your order.
  5. Cabinet-box material: Name the sides, backs, bottoms and shelves. Specify the interior appearance separately from the door species.
  6. Grain matching: Record the direction and continuity across adjacent fronts. Ask who selects and approves the arrangement.

Our questions for a cabinet maker cover the wider order, payment and installation discussion. Ask for written answers before approving production.
