## TL;DR

Framed and frameless cabinets are 2 ways to build the cabinet box. A framed cabinet has a wood face frame around the opening. A frameless cabinet doesn't.[5](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-5)

- **1. Construction:** A face frame has horizontal rails and vertical stiles. On a frameless cabinet, the hinges mount to the box sides.[5](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-5)
- **2. Doors:** Framed lines can offer inset, partial-overlay and full-overlay doors. Frameless lines commonly use full overlay, though inset is possible as a special build.[2](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-2) [3](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-3) [4](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-4)
- **3. Access:** In one maker's catalog, a 30-in. wall cabinet has a 27-in. clear opening when framed and a 28.5-in. opening when frameless.[1](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-1)
- **4. Installation:** Both types need square, level installation. One frameless maker specifies 1/16-in. door reveals that need careful alignment.[8](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-8) [9](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-9)
- **5. Cost:** One dealer reports a 10% to 15% frameless premium over comparable framed lines, based on August 2026 cabinet prices. Installation isn't included.[6](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-6)
- **6. Choice:** Price framed cabinets if you want more door-position options. Price frameless cabinets if clear access through the opening matters most. Check the actual cabinets before you order.

| --- | --- | --- |
| Front construction | Wood face frame with rails and stiles.[5](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-5) | Finished box edges with no face frame.[5](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-5) |
| Door positions | Inset, partial overlay and full overlay, depending on the line.[2](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-2) | Commonly full overlay; inset needs a suitable special build.[3](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-3) [4](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-4) |
| Hinge mounting | Face frame.[5](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-5) | Box side.[5](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-5) |
| Clear front opening in one maker's 30-in. wall cabinet | 27 in.[1](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-1) | 28.5 in., or 1.5 in. wider in this example.[1](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-1) |
| Center division in one maker's wider wall cabinets | 1 1/2-in. center stile at 39 to 45 in. wide.[1](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-1) | 3/4-in. center partition at 39 to 48 in. wide.[1](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-1) |
| Installation | Level, plumb and square; inset reveals need careful adjustment.[9](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-9) | Level, plumb and square; narrow reveals need careful adjustment.[8](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-8) |
| Appearance | The visible frame depends on the door position.[2](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-2) | Full-overlay fronts; traditional and contemporary door styles are available.[3](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-3) |
| Cost direction: one dealer, August 2026 | Lower cabinet price in this dealer's comparison.[6](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-6) | 10% to 15% more for cabinet prices; installation isn't included.[6](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-6) |
| Best for | A choice of door positions. | Clear access through the opening. |

## What are framed cabinets?

Framed cabinets have a wood face frame, and one maker uses members that are 1 1/2 in. wide and 3/4 in. thick.[2](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-2) [5](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-5)

Open a door and look at the wood around the opening. The inside edges can extend past the box sides. If the door or finish hides the construction, ask for a section drawing.

### Face frame cabinets vs frameless: rails and stiles

One maker's face-frame rails and stiles are 1 1/2 in. wide and 3/4 in. thick; frameless boxes have no such members.[2](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-2) [5](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-5)

The rails run across the cabinet. The stiles run up and down. Width is measured across the front face, while thickness runs front to back.

A Shaker door has its own rails and stiles. Those door parts have separate dimensions.[10](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-10)

## What are frameless cabinets?

Frameless cabinets have no face frame, and one maker specifies 3/4-in. ends for its frameless line.[3](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-3) [5](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-5)

The hinges attach to the box sides. The front edges need a finished edge treatment. One maker offers PVC or wood-veneer edge banding.[3](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-3)

Ask to see a sample with the door open. You'll be able to check the finished edge and the hinge attachment for yourself.

### European and full-access cabinets

European and full-access are 2 names that makers use for frameless construction.[3](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-3) [5](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-5)

Those names don't tell you where the cabinet was made or which door design it uses. Check the construction sheet. A closed-door photo may hide most of the box.

## Storage and access: the opening you get

One maker's 30-in. wall cabinet has a 27-in. framed opening and a 28.5-in. frameless opening, a difference of 1.5 in.[1](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-1)

Here's the arithmetic from the catalog dimensions:

- Framed: 30 in. - (2 x 1.5 in.) = 27 in.
- Frameless: 30 in. - (2 x 0.75 in.) = 28.5 in.
- Difference: 28.5 in. - 27 in. = 1.5 in.[1](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-1)

![Front and plan views of 2 wall cabinets, each 30 inches wide: framed with 1 1/2-inch side stiles and a 27-inch opening; frameless with 3/4-inch ends and a 28 1/2-inch opening.](https://cabinetshop.com/assets/img/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets-plan-1.svg)

This example measures the clear opening before hinges or other hardware take up space. It doesn't establish drawer width, storage volume or a percentage gain. Wider cabinets with a center division need their own calculation.

For the outside sizes of wall and base cabinets, see our [kitchen cabinet dimensions](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/kitchen-cabinet-dimensions/) guide.

### Drawers

One supplier subtracts 3/8 in. from the cabinet opening to size a drawer box for its specified undermount slides.[7](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-7)

That allowance applies to that supplier's slide system. It doesn't give you a finished drawer width for the wall-cabinet example above. The supplier sets drawer depth from cabinet depth and treats inset and overlay face-frame cabinets differently.[7](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-7)

Ask for the inside width, depth and usable height on both bids. Bring the organizers and other items you plan to store. The outside cabinet width alone won't tell you if they work in the drawer.

### The center stile between two doors

One maker puts a 1 1/2-in. center stile in framed wall cabinets 39 to 45 in. wide and a 3/4-in. center partition in frameless wall cabinets 39 to 48 in. wide.[1](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-1) The catalog calls the stile a center mull. Its framed wall cabinets 24 to 36 in. wide have no center member.[1](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-1)

![Front views of one maker's wall cabinets: framed at 30 inches wide with no center member and 39 to 45 inches wide with a 1 1/2-inch center stile; frameless at 30 inches wide with no center member and 39 to 48 inches wide with a 3/4-inch center partition.](https://cabinetshop.com/assets/img/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets-plan-2.svg)

Check the drawing for each cabinet. If you need to store a wide platter, ask for the uninterrupted opening with both doors open. Include the hinges, door swing and center division in that measurement.

## Doors: inset, overlay and what each box allows

Full-overlay fronts are used on 2 box types: framed and frameless cabinets.[2](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-2) [3](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-3)

The door position alone doesn't tell you how the box is built. Inset fronts sit inside the face-frame opening and are flush with its front surface. Full overlay covers most of the frame. Partial overlay leaves more of it visible.[2](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-2)

Inset doors can go on a frameless box as a special build. One door maker says it doesn't typically see that combination.[4](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-4) Ask for a section drawing if you want it.

Our [inset vs overlay cabinets](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/inset-vs-overlay-cabinets/) guide covers the door-position choice.

![Two front-corner plan sections show a framed cabinet hinge on the face frame and a frameless cabinet hinge on the box side, with separate inset and overlay door-position details.](https://cabinetshop.com/assets/img/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets-plan-3.svg)

### Framed vs frameless Shaker cabinets

A Shaker door has 5 pieces, and makers offer it on both framed and frameless cabinets.[10](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-10)

The door has a flat center panel with rails and stiles around it. Pick the door proportions separately from the cabinet-box construction. Our [Shaker cabinets](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/shaker-cabinets/) guide covers those details.

## Installation and uneven walls

One frameless installation guide specifies 1/16-in. door reveals, and one framed maker provides a nominal 1/16-in. rear scribe allowance.[8](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-8) [9](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-9)

Both cabinet types need to be level, plumb and square. The frameless guide warns that boxes can move out of square during installation. Ask who will correct uneven walls and floors before the cabinets are fastened.[8](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-8)

Framed cabinets need the same care. One maker warns that forcing its cabinets against crooked walls can move the boxes out of square and misalign the doors.[9](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-9)

Have the installer show every filler, scribe and finished end on the drawing. Ask who pays for room preparation. The quote should also say who returns to adjust the doors after installation.

## Strength and durability

Framed and frameless cabinets have no sourced strength ranking here; one maker specifies 1/2-in. sides for its framed line and 3/4-in. sides for its frameless line.[2](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-2) [3](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-3)

Those are product specifications from one maker. They don't support a strength ranking for all cabinets. Ask how the sides, back and joints are assembled, and how the cabinets will attach to the building.

One installation guide warns that frameless boxes can move out of square without a face frame.[8](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-8) A framed guide also warns about distorted boxes, especially with inset fronts.[9](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-9) Neither guide provides a matched load test for the 2 constructions.

Compare the panel material along with its thickness. Our [medium-density fiberboard and plywood comparison](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/mdf-vs-plywood/) covers that choice. If you'll store heavy items, ask for the shelf and drawer load ratings on the proposed cabinet.

## Framed vs frameless cabinets cost

Frameless cabinet prices can be 10% to 15% higher: one dealer reports that range for comparable lines using August 2026 prices.[6](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-6)

These are cabinet prices. Installation isn't included. The dealer says thicker panels, tighter manufacturing tolerances and factory assembly account for the difference.[6](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-6)

Treat that range as one dealer's estimate. It doesn't establish the installed price for your kitchen.

Ask for both constructions on the same layout. Keep the door material, finish, drawer hardware, accessories and delivery requirements the same where you can. Have the dealer list every specification that changes between the quotes.

Then compare installed totals with the same work included in each. Our [custom cabinet cost guide](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/custom-cabinet-cost/) explains what to include.

## Framed vs frameless cabinets: pros and cons

The 2 constructions give you different door choices, opening access and installation details.[2](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-2) [3](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-3) [5](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-5)

Framed:

- Framed lines can offer inset, partial-overlay and full-overlay doors.[2](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-2)
- The face frame takes up space at the front opening.[5](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-5)
- Inset fronts need careful alignment during installation.[9](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-9)

Frameless:

- The opening has no face frame in front of it.[5](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-5)
- Shaker and other traditional door designs are available.[3](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-3) [10](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-10)
- Narrow door reveals need careful installation and adjustment.[8](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-8)
- Some cabinet widths have an internal division.[1](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-1)

## Which to choose

The 2 cabinet types work for different priorities: framed gives you more door-position choices, while frameless gives you clearer access through the opening.

Price framed cabinets if you want inset fronts inside a visible face frame. A framed full-overlay line may also give you the look you want at a lower matched price.

Price frameless cabinets if you store wide items or want fewer obstructions at the opening. Check the actual layout before you pay more. Ask the installer to explain the room preparation and adjustment work in the bid.

If both types work for your storage, compare the finish sample, hardware, construction details and installed total. Write down which differences matter before you approve the order.

## What to ask the cabinetmaker

Ask the cabinetmaker for 3 things first: construction drawings, usable storage dimensions and an itemized installation scope.

- What material and thickness will you use for the sides, back and shelves?
- What are the face-frame member sizes, and which openings have center divisions?
- What clear opening remains with the doors open and the hinges installed?
- What are the finished inside drawer dimensions?
- Which door positions are available on this line?
- Where will you use fillers or scribes, and who handles uneven walls?
- What changed between the framed and frameless quotes?

Use the same answers to compare bids. Keep them with the approved drawings. Our [questions to ask a cabinetmaker](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/questions-to-ask-a-cabinet-maker/) guide covers the rest of the hiring conversation.

## Questions people actually ask

### What is the difference between framed and frameless cabinets?

Framed cabinets have a wood face frame of rails and stiles; frameless cabinets don't have a face frame, and their hinges mount to the box sides.[5](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-5)

### Are frameless cabinets more expensive than framed cabinets?

It depends on the lines being compared; one dealer reports a 10% to 15% frameless premium for comparable cabinet lines using August 2026 prices.[6](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-6) Those are cabinet prices, and installation isn't included. Ask for the same layout, finish and installation scope in both quotes.

### What are the downsides of frameless cabinets?

The downsides of frameless cabinets are careful installation, a possible higher price and fewer door positions. One installation guide specifies 1/16-in. door reveals and warns that boxes can move out of square during installation without a face frame.[8](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-8) One dealer reports a 10% to 15% frameless premium for comparable cabinet lines, before installation.[6](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-6) Inset doors require a special build.[2](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-2) [4](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-4) Check the door and hinge details for the cabinets you're pricing.

### Should I get framed or frameless cabinets?

Choose framed cabinets if you want more door-position choices, and choose frameless cabinets if clear access through the opening matters most.[2](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-2) [5](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-5) Compare the proposed products and installed prices before you decide.

### Can frameless cabinets have inset doors?

Yes, as a special build. One door maker recognizes inset frameless construction and says it doesn't typically see that combination.[4](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-4) Ask for the door position and hinge details in the shop drawing.

## Where these numbers come from

The 30-in. opening calculation uses one maker's wall-cabinet catalog.[1](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-1) Component sizes come from manufacturer specifications.[2](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-2) [3](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-3) Drawer allowances and installation details also come from manufacturers.[7](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-7) [8](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-8) [9](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-9)

The 10% to 15% cabinet-price range comes from one dealer's August 2026 estimate. It's separate from the opening calculation.[6](https://cabinetshop.com/guides/framed-vs-frameless-cabinets/#source-6) We checked the source pages on October 6, 2026. ### Before you approve the cabinet order

Bring your cabinetmaker the layout, door sample, finish sample and the wide items you plan to store. Ask for drawings that show every clear opening, center division, door position, filler and scribe. If you're comparing framed and frameless, make sure both quotes use the same finish, hardware, delivery and installation scope.
